Let’s have a small talk about weather.
How is the weather over where you live? It had been quite warm already here in Switzerland but since a few days a strong wind has brought colder air back and today it’s not only windy but also rainy. A cold, rainy storm.
That doesn’t sound too inviting does it?
My grandfather always said: “There is no bad weather, just bad choice of clothing.” And there is a lot of truth to that. Wearing a raincoat and rubber boots while walking through those mud puddles makes it much less frustrating. But there is something else that helps me to actually appreciate “bad” weather.
Few years back, I had an Aha-Moment while watching a documentary called “In The Shadow Of The Moon”. It’s a beautiful story about the Apollo space missions to the moon, told by the astronauts. And it was incredible to hear how this mission not only changed their lives, but also their perception of life on earth in general. One of the astronauts said something that stuck with me ever since.
“Since that time, I have not complained about the weather one single time – I’m glad there IS weather. I’ve not complained about traffic – I’m glad there are people around. One of the things that I did when I got home? I went down to the shopping centers and I’d just go around there, get an ice cream cone or something and watch the people go by and think: Boy we’re lucky to be here. Why do people complain about the earth? We are living in the garden of eden.” – Alan Bean
And I think he is so right. When you think of it, of all the planets and stars out there… from what we know so far, the earth is the most miraculous planet. It’s stunningly diverse, full of energy and bursting with life! Imagine how living on a place like the moon would be. Dusty, grey, dry and no weather at all. And then look at what’s around us. We’re living on a ball of wonders! And the rain, the sunshine, the wind, the snow… all of the weathers are part of it and necessary to create beauty, to have changing seasons and to keep the earth as vibrant and lively as it is.
So next time we’re standing in the rain, let’s not get too annoyed; let’s think of how lucky we are.

April 24, 2015 at 7:39 pmAh, so true! Love this post, Franzi! I wasn\’t sure what to expect when I saw your title as I\’m absolutely loving the awesome weather we\’ve been having lately, haha, but I\’ve always appreciated the rain when it was needed (just maybe not so much when I had to go out into it – I like your grandfather\’s saying!). But that quote from Alan Bean and this post as a whole makes me see it in an even bigger picture and adore this miraculous world that much more (thank you for that reminder!) I\’m glad to be reading this just right after Earth Day… very fitting 🙂
