The other night I had a sleepless night. It started with nice dreams, when I suddenly woke up at 3 am by a strange noise. It was Fritzi, puking. On my white carpet. Don’t worry, Fritzi is fine and was allready jumping around again, when I came to clean it up. The carpet on the other hand, not so fine. Oh well, white is overrated anyways, right? 😉
Back in bed, I couldn’t fall asleep anymore. So I stayed awake. In case you don’t know me well enough yet, you have to know that I love spring. Looove it! It’s a magical time for me, especially, waking up from the bird orchestra in the morning. It makes my heart smile. So it’s not really a suprise that the first bird singing in the early morning hours caught my attention immediately. I was suprised how early it started to sing, it was only 4:40 am!
That made me curious and I checked online which birds are the first to sing in the morning. A new and interesting fact to me was, that each kind of bird has its particular time to start singing in the morning, depending on the light of sunrise. I always thought they all start to sing whenever they feel like it 😀 So if you wake up and don’t know what time it is, you could theoretically listen to which birds are singing (or not singing yet) and figure out the time.
The first bird that started to sing that night at 4:40 am must have been a robin. After the redstart (“Gartenrotschwanz”), who won’t be back in this region until april, robins are the first to sing around here, precisely 1 hour and 20 minutes before sunrise. Maybe it was this little guy, that keeps showing up in our garden.

The next bird to tune in is the blackbird, precisely 5 minutes after the robin, followed by the wren, who starts singing 1 hour and 10 minutes before sunrise. Until sunrise more and more birds join the orchestra. The last one to join is the starling. He only starts singing 10 minutes after sunrise.
I found all of this so interesting that I now want to learn more about birds and their sounds and singing. I would love to be able to recognize the different songs of the different species living here. It’s such a wonderful way to connect with nature!

So, this is what kept me awake that night. I listed to more and more birds joining into the orchestra and finally fell back asleep. When I woke up again at 7:00 am the air was already filled up with all kinds of bird songs. I had to open the window and think to myself, that the best concerts are for free!
