It’s the 20th of march! And if you haven’t heared yet, this day marks the date of Meatout, the world’s largest grassroots diet education campaign. Every year, since 1985, thousands of people are spreading the word about a meatless diet on this day, and it keeps on growing. Last year, I also joined the compaign with my blog and shared a vegan recipe. It was a lot of fun and I loved finding out about new blogs, who also shared their recipes. I’m very happy to be able to participate again this year! And because breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, I want to share my new super yummy granola recipe with you today. Happy Meatout Day!
Eating homemade granola for breakfast is the best! Let me tell you why I love making granola:
- It’s very quick and easy. Just throw all ingredients together and bake it for some minutes… tadaaaa!
- You know exactly what’s in it. You have the choice!
- It’s a lot cheaper, even if you use organic ingredients
- Your place will smell like cookies the whole day (now, if this doesn’t convince you! ;-))
- The word “homemade” just adds the extra magical flavor
Since I started to make my own granola, I’ve tried a lot of combinations but the one I’m about to share with you, has to be my new favorite. It’s simple but so good.
I’ve always been a big fan of the flavor combination of chocolate and orange. They go so well together, so I thought to myself: why not make Chocolate Orange Granola??? I’m actually suprised that I didn’t have the idea years before… but rather later than never right? 😉
It took me three tries to make it taste the way I like it. Now it has the right balance between chocolate and orange and it’s not too sweet, since I’m trying to cut down the sugar. So if you need more sweetness, just add some more maple syrup. You could add sugar too, but I prefer natural sweetener.
So here we go:
Homemade Orange Chocolate Granola (Vegan)
- 2 cups old fashion rolled oats
- 2 cups quick rolled oats
- 2 tbsp pure cocoa powder (no milk added)
- 1 pinch of salt
- zest of 2 organic oranges
- juice of 1 organic orange (about 1/3 cup)
- 1/3 cup sunflower oil
- 3-4 tbsp maple syrup
- 85g dark chocolate (most of the dark kinds are vegan, but double check, if it’s dairy-free)
Mix together dry ingredients first (oats, cocoa powder, salt). Then add the orange zest, orange juice, sunflower oil and maple syrup and mix together until well combined.
Spread granola on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake for 20 min. at 356°F/180°C, starting with a cold oven. Rotate the baking sheet tray halfway through baking and stirr the granola with a spoon so it will cook evenly. After 20 minutes you can turn of the oven and leave the granola for another 5-8 minutes until it’s baked to your liking. While the granola is cooling down, chop the chocolate in small pieces and add them to the granola, once it cooled down completely.
And now you can enjoy your homemade vegan granola for breakfast, or any time! Instead of milk I like using almond or soy-rice milk. No need for dairy milk. : )
