My Vegetable Garden Part 6

August 21, 2011

Here is a new update from my little vegetable garden!

So far, the summer has been more rainy than sunny (it’s actually starting to rain again while I’m writing this) but it seems like it didn’t bother my plants too much, exept that the tomatoes are growing very slowly due to the low temperatures. When you look at the picture with all the veggies, you can tell that the plants grew very big. So big, that they are actually too close to eachother. One thing I learned and that I will keep in mind for next year. Also, the pumpkins are spreading a lot, growing arms, and because they are attracted by the direction of the sun, they are now trying to grow to the wrong direction, which is not good for my brussels sprouts. But since this is the first year of growing my own veggies I think it’s actually good to make these mistakes. It’s the best way to learn.

But let’s talk about the veggies! My zucchinis grew bigger and faster than I could eat! Now, everytime I go outside to pick one I say: “I’ll go get one of the monster-zucchinis!” It’s true, they are so big, you could probably kill somebody with it! Or you could do a nice arm workout if you use them as dumbbells. They definatelly grew beyond their originally purpose 😉

I was once told that zucchinis taste best when they are still very small but to be honest I didn’t think that the big zucchinis lost much of their taste. What I didn’t like, was that the skin got very thick and even when you cook it, it stays a bit chewy. Nevertheless, I love my homegrown zucchinis! I celebrate every single one while cooking and think what an enrichment it is to grow my own vegetables.

Soon, I also hope to harvest some pumpkins – they are just starting to grow. The beans are having flowers now, they are also a bit late but I’m sure they will be fantastic.

My brussels sprouts are growing well, but some of my animal garden friends seem to really like them (you can tell by the pictures). I just hope they leave some for me, comes winter. : )

For a beginner, you did pretty well. You can expect a good harvest from your garden the way I see it. Unlike other beginners where they had encountered a lot of problems that in the end they lose interest. Congratulations.

Thank you! 🙂 Next year I hope it will be even better. I learned from some mistakes…
